Hello There From Blogland

Yes, I blame Facebook for all my blog woes!

Donna and I went to church last Sunday and on our way out, when it was our turn to greet the priest he mentioned in passing, "I read your blog on line."

I didn't even realize he knows me.

We were paying for our telephone bill yesterday and we met friend Mike and he's saying my last blog post was about the devastation of typhoon Ondoy and I realize it gets to be depressing after a while and so here I am blogging again.

Now, where to begin? So much has happened since. It's been a while so you'll have to settle for events and happenings which I'm going to be jumping back and forth on in terms of dates they actually occurred.

ONDOY, The Storm of the Year

A week before typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana), another typhoon - I've forgotten its name now, has already inundated our region with so much rain that I had to move my potted euphorbias from the yard into the driveway. Those which are planted on the ground, obviously cannot be moved. And a couple of them have started to show some symptoms of dying. I've already had one die on me. Donna says it was old and perhaps it's gone through its life span - which I think is baloney. Anyway, this was basically my gripe about all the rain.

And then comes Ondoy.

Saturday, Sept 26, we had an invitation to attend the blessing of an apartment building in Angeles City owned by Ayrin's brother. Ayrin is nephew Mike's wife. He's Atching Tess' son. Anyway, Ayrin told us the building is located after the bridge on Friendship Highway - this is in the vicinity of Clark. She said there will be some food served after the blessing and that we should be there by 3:30 pm. Everyone (Sister Gay, Mike's sisters Len and Berna and their daughters) was supposed to be here before three so we can all go together. And they did show up on time. The problem - it was raining so hard and there was such poor visibility (yes, that's how hard the rain was) that we thought it best to wait for it to let up. At a little past 3 I looked out the window and found our street covered with about 3-4 inches of water. Our storm drains can't take all the rainwater that was falling down. We had to send Ayrin a text message telling her we'd be a bit late because of the rain. We then finally realized this was the start of Ondoy's onslaught.

A little before four, we braved it out and headed towards Angeles via Paning's (yes, this is the place where most Capampangan balikbayan's get their watermelon seeds snacks to take back to the US), and onto Friendship Highway. I figured because of all the rain McArthur Highway's traffic will be horrendous. Big mistake. It turned out, the place was closer towards the perimeter fence rather than Friendship Highway. From Paning's, we encountered a lot of street flooding. I tried not to think about it at the time but one big rush of flash flooding and our vehicle would have been toast and we would have ended up swimming for our lives!

We arrived to a very wet and dark (there was no power) reception. There was quite a lot of food though. We basically took off after eating. On the way back, I learned my lesson, we took McArthur Highway and dropped off Donna at her school. I dropped off Len and her kids at their place in Baliti and I dropped off the rest of my passengers on the road in front of Greenfields.

And the rest is history. I'm not going to bore you with the depressing pictures of Ondoy's wrath. I'm sure most of you have seen them all by now.

Robby Tantingco of HAU's CKS, wrote a really interesting article about the storm in the Pampanga Sun Star. Check it out here.

Our listeners, all three of them (more I hope) had to settle with a rerun of our radio show.

Have I told you about our radio show?

Well, when Cong Paing was here last August, he was interviewed by Benny Guinto (Benny G, for short) in his radio show at a local station DWBL (Bright Light) 91.9 FM. When he told Benny G about our Capampangan advocacy and Parnasong Capampangan, Benny G asked, "Would you be interested to host one hour air time on the radio to spread your advocacy and perhaps recite Capampangan poems on the air?" They had an opening at 8-9 pm every Saturday. It costs P1,500 or roughly $35. You can imagine Cong Paing's excitement with this new development.

In short last Saturday was basically our 8th broadcast including the replay of the Saturday before during typhoon Ondoy's fury. Our new Prinsipi ning Parnaso Romy Rodriguez is the main host and Cong Naring is the co-host. I join them most of the time as part of the decor and I strum my guitar mindlessly along the way while they recite their poems. We've had a few poets visit as guests, Maritess Evangelista from Sasmuan, Esting Mallari from Macabebe, Adrian Magcalas from Mabalacat and of course when they were still here, Cong Paing and the new king himself, Ari Ning Parnaso Renato Bonus Alzadon.

Romy was absent last Saturday because he got stranded at his place in Del Carmen with Peping's (Ondoy's successor, international name Parma) floodwaters. I wasn't going to go myself but at around 6 or so Cong Naring sent me a text message saying he's already at the station so I figured I might as well go. When I arrived there about 7:30, I found him and Maritess inside the booth with Benny G. Since he was by himself, his guests and his co-host didn't show up, he had Cong Naring and Maritess as guests. He even recited a short poem off of RBA's book Casapunggul a Sampaga.

We were a bit nervous when our time came but once we started it went fairly smooth considering we didn't have our main host with us.

The King and The Governor

Tuesday, August 25, 2009
After his Journey to Parnassus, the King wanted to meet with the rest of the Capampangan poets so the CKS scheduled a luncheon on his behalf and it was held at Holy Angel University's Cafe Nena. It provided a venue for several poets reciting all kinds of Capampangan poetry. Ca Rene's basic message was for the new group Parnasong Capampangan to set aside the bickering, focus on the positive, move forward and stop the backward trend of the dying Amanung Sisuan.

It was time for the King to meet with the Governor. I've had the opportunity to talk with Governor Panlilio in the past and I find him a down-to-earth and very humble person. His meeting with the King was actually a fun, fruitful and productive event. When I told him about Ca Rene's visit on the graves of the three late Ari Ning Parnaso, he took out his laptop to watch the YouTube video of Ca Rene reciting "Potang Mete Na Cu" over the grave of Jose Gallardo.

Ca Rene was supposed to be interviewed by Boy Santos and company of RW FM 95.1 this morning but literally on the last minute, we were about 2 minutes away from the station when I received a text message from Myra saying the interview has been postponed because they went off the air due to some equipment malfunction. So Ca Rene and I went to have breakfast at the Bale Capampangan and we dropped by the local TV station Infomax Channel 8 to pick up the DVD from their interview during May of last year.

We had the chance to talk with their marketing director Jomel Cruz about Parnasong Capampangan and our advocacy. I pointed out that Infomax was the pioneer in Capampangan TV broadcasting in the province. We invited them for the Friday coronation of the King and his Prince. I told Jomel we can use all the help that we can get in creating awareness of the situation of the Capampangan language.

We then dropped by Benigno Aquino Hall to check out what's going on. When we arrived, the Pulosa and Short Story Telling Contest sponsored by the Provincial Language Council (PLC) was going on. They gave him a chance to deliver a short talk about the advocacy and he also met with the famous pulosador 'Diwata'. He was ecstatic when he got a signed copy of the King's Casapunggul a Sampaga.
CIMG4003CIMG4005CIMG4009

A few minutes later, we went towards Masamat to have lunch with Cong Naring and family.

Sunday, August 30, 2009
Since this blog is about the King and The Governor, I'll skip the huge event Aldo ning Amanung Sisuan and tell you a bit about the interview of Ca Rene at GV FM in Angeles City in a show called "Mal a Pampanga" hosted by the Governor himself and Irwin Nucum. Ca Rene and I went to the station and for a change we weren't rushing, we're actually way too early because we were told the show starts at 2:30 so we got there a little bit after two but found out that it actually doesn't start until 3 and our segment and actual interview was towards the end of the show. It still turned out good because once again we were able to put out the message of our advocacy. They asked us a bunch of questions about Parnasong Capampangan and Ca Rene's start into poetry, the Ari Ning Parnaso's election process, and about the Capampangan language advocacy in general. Everyone was in agreement that the language is in peril and in dire need of support and love by its own people.

A Party and a Journey

Sunday, August 23, 2009
When neighbor and walking buddy Doret Tombo's daughters graduated from nursing at the Angeles University Foundation earlier in the year, he treated us close friends and some of his relatives at the Fortune's Restaurant in Balibago. He promised at the time, there'll be a much bigger thanksgiving celebration once they pass the RN board exams. That promise was fulfilled last Sunday.
CIMG3888

Our guest, the new Ari Ning Parnaso, Rene Alzadon and I were taking a nap when a text message woke me up. It was from Doret saying there was a mass before the dinner. Only then did I realize that I forgot all about the party. I immediately sent Donna a text message telling her about it. She decided to leave school right away so we'd just meet at the Greenfields Country Club where the party is being held.

It was almost 8 pm when Ca Rene and I arrived. Everyone was asking why we were late and where Donna was. I introduced Ca Rene to everyone, then we got ushered in and after we chose our table we went to the food line to get our dinner. The line was actually non-existent when we got there because almost everyone was already settled in having dinner. Entertainment was provided by an acoustic trio, two male guitar players and a girl singing. I was pretty impressed the way the guys harmonized 70's folk songs. The famous aLa Creme catered the event. We're about to start our meals when Donna arrived.
CIMG3864CIMG3865CIMG3867CIMG3866

It's as if the whole of Greenfields was there, it was indeed a huge celebration.
There was a bunch of chicahan after dinner.

I stressed to my neighbors how lucky they should feel in the presence of the new King of Parnassus (Ari Ning Parnaso). And the conversation evolved from there. The King even gave them a sample of a short Capampangan poem.

Monday, August 24, 2009
Ca Rene told me when he was much younger, the former Ari Ning Parnaso, Jose Gallardo, gave him the poem "Potang Mete Na Cu" to recite over his grave when he's gone. So Myra from CKS scheduled the trip Journey to Parnassus for Ca Rene to visit the graves of all the three deceased and former Ari Ning Parnaso.

We woke up early to go to CKS to pick up Joel Mallari along with Ria from Sunstar. We then went to Angeles City Pampang Public Market to fetch PL Imang Ofring dela Pena, PL Frank Guinto and the daughter of Jose Gallardo, Luzviminda Gallardo-Nolasco to guide us to the great poet's grave in Candaba. One last stop was Anunas, Angeles City for PL Amado 'Doy' Gigante.

Our first spot was to Barangay Maquiapo, in Guagua for the grave of Amado Yuzon. After several stops asking for directions, we finally found it. It turned out, he was buried right in front of his ancestral house. The idea was to turn the property into a memorial/museum type place but due to political red tape, the plan didn't materialize leaving the place in a sad state of disrepair and neglect.
CIMG3906CIMG3907CIMG3907CIMG3915CIMG3923CIMG3924

We had lunch at Jollibee and then it was time to go to the Candaba cemetery for Jose Gallardo. And it's here that the new King recited "Potang Mete Na Cu". It's good that we had his daughter with us, otherwise we wouldn't have found Gallardo's unmarked grave.
CIMG3925CIMG3948>CIMG3936CIMG3938

On the way to Vedasto Ocampo's grave in Magalang, we dropped off Luzviminda Gallardo-Nolasco and we also dropped by Imang Ofring's ancestral house in San Luis.
CIMG3940CIMG3941

When we arrived in Magalang, we picked up Edward, Vedasto Ocampo's grand son to guide us to the memorial park.
CIMG3958CIMG3950CIMG3953CIMG3959

Once we were finished with the prayers we went on our way back to Angeles to drop everyone else off. This time we went the other way towards the Angeles City exit of the NLEx. It was a little past 5 when Ca Rene and I got back to Sindalan. After unwinding a bit from the day trip, we had dinner at Sylvia's restaurant.

Ari Ning Parnaso's Arrival

It's too bad I had to miss Blood - The Last Vampire but I did get to watch G.I. Joe which is a pretty good "guy movie".

It's 12:56 am right now Sunday night or Monday morning rather but I figured I'd better start blogging or it'll get overwhelming again trying to keep up on my updates.

Wednesday 8-19-09
Pat, Donna's school mate has been saying that for the longest time one of their friends intended to take them to the Monasterio de Tarlac. And she has not. So, we thought since Donna and I have been there several times taking friends, we might as well take Pat and the rest of the Guagua gang.
CIMG3834CIMG3836CIMG3837CIMG3844

Friday 8-21-09
It's a day that we have been looking forward to, the day the new Ari ning Parnaso arrives at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA). Around 8 pm, I went to Dolores to pick up Cong Paing and Cong Naring. Romy wasn't ready so we went and drove to Greenfields and waited for him. Once he arrived, we proceeded to Clark DMIA. Since there was only one Asiana flight coming, there weren't too many waiting when we arrived, added to the fact that we got there about an hour early. His flight was supposed to land at 11:45 and he got out of the terminal just a few minutes after.
CIMG3850CIMG3852CIMG3853

Saturday 8-22-09
I took the King to Holy Angel University (HAU) for him to meet and greet the Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) staff. Myra gave him his itinerary and he settled some business with her.
CIMG3855CIMG3859

Afterwards I took him to SM mall in San Fernando to buy a SIM card for his cell phone and to check out some Barongs. That was around noon so we had some lunch at Max's.

The Sunday before, I was approached by someone from St. Paul right after the mass to do the offering at the next Saturday 6 pm mass so we took the King with us to church and right afterwards I took him to the new local radio station DWBL 91.9 Bright FM for the 8-9 show Parnasong Capampangan. The new Prinsipi ning Parnaso Romy Rodriguez hosted it while PL Rafael Maniago, Poet Naring Maniago and the King himself read some authentic Capampangan poetry. Sorry, can't shoot any videos, I was playing the guitar.
